THE IMPORTANCE OF HUMAN CONNECTION IN THE AI ERA

We hear it all the time, “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know,” but the truth is, the right connections often do open more doors than knowledge or skills alone. With nearly 20 years in the networking world, helping professionals across a variety of industries build meaningful relationships, I have seen firsthand the power of strong networks.

Living in the “era of AI” and watching technology and communication channels evolve every day has only reinforced how important it is to be intentional about forming genuine, human connections – and doing so IN PERSON. Sure, connecting over LinkedIn, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams is faster and arguably more convenient, but this also introduces a significant challenge: the erosion of authentic, face-to-face interactions.

With technology making communication easier than ever, many people now rely on LinkedIn messages, post comments, and virtual meetings to build their networks. But digital connections alone rarely create the trust and depth that come from in-person interactions. While these tools offer access, they often fall short in fostering the credibility and meaningful opportunities that real-world relationships provide.

There’s an undeniable energy exchange in a handshake, an eye-to-eye conversation, or a shared moment over lunch or a cup of coffee. No digital tool can fully replicate the energy of being in the same room with someone.

I have built a business on the belief that meaningful relationships—not transactional networking—drive real success. We are bringing together professionals who value trust, collaboration and growth, and creating an environment where every connection leads to real opportunities. I see these opportunities come to life firsthand because when you put people together who demonstrate a genuine willingness to help their peers and prioritize in-person experiences, you build a community rooted in mutual support and shared success.

To be fair, AI and digital tools have their place and we should make a strong effort to adapt and use them to our advantage. They enhance our networking efforts by helping us maintain contact with connections regardless of geography, identifying potential new connections, streamlining introductions … the list goes on. However, we must not get complacent and allow digital communication to become a substitute for human interaction.

As AI continues to advance, our workforce will only become more automated. Skills that were once exclusive to humans are now being adopted by AI. While AI enhances efficiency, it can’t replicate the trust and camaraderie built through real-world interactions. Professionals who excel in building relationships and maintaining strong networks will always have the upper hand. The ability to build genuine connections, earn trust, and nurture lasting partnerships will continue to differentiate you in your personal and professional life.

Consider these three key strategies to increase the value and integrity of your network:

  1. Prioritize face-to-face interaction: Make an effort to attend industry events and networking meetups, and plan frequent in-person meetings – rather than leaning on Zoom or Teams as your go-to. Your presence and personal engagement will leave a lasting impression that digital interactions simply cannot match.

  2. Use AI and social media to enhance, not replace, your efforts: Leverage technology for discovering new contacts or ideas, but don’t let it replace meaningful relationship-building. A personalized message or face-to-face follow-up goes a long way in deepening connections.

  3. Give before you get: The strongest networks are built on generosity and a shared desire to help others. Lend a helping hand without immediately expecting something in return. Whether it’s making an introduction, sharing insights, or offering mentorship, adding value to your network will always pay off.

AI is revolutionizing how we work and communicate, but it will never replace the power of human connection. In a world where automation is becoming the norm, authentic relationships will be the ultimate differentiator. Your network is more important than ever before, and those who invest in meaningful, in-person relationships will continue to thrive.

We must be intentional about how we build and nurture our networks. By prioritizing personal interactions and focusing on genuine relationship-building, we ensure that our network remains our greatest asset—now and in the future.
